Iphone 5 Release date set
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 5 at a press conference in San Francisco, showing off a taller, slimmer device with a metal back and increased battery life capable of harnessing 4G LTE that will be shipped in the UK on September 21.
Apple's latest iPhone was introduced by company senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller, who said of the handset:
'It is an absolute jewel. It is the most beautiful product we have ever made, bar none.
'I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike anything we've ever undertaken before.'
Pre-orders for the eagerly-anticipated iPhone 5 will open on Friday September 14, shipping on September 21 in the UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Schiller also revealed the phone will utilise 'ultrafast wireless' technology LTE, making it capable of receiving data through 4G. It will also cope better in sunlight glare and run popular music software application Garage Band.
The iPhone 5 has five columns of icons rather than the current four found on the 4S, along with the usual scrolling list of four shortcuts along the bottom. It houses a 326ppi Retina display, measuring 4in.
The taller screen will allow a better movie-viewing experience, with the video display now closer to a 16:9 ratio.
iPhone 5 also allows you to share photos with friends and family using iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams.
The iPhone's Maps application has also been given an overhaul, offering 3D views of cities that Schiller showed off by zooming in, out and around Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
A new iPod Touch was unveiled in tandem at the press conference which will be available in five colours - pink, yellow, blue, white & silver and black & slate - and features many of the functions available on the iPhone 5 including 'intelligent assistant' Siri, though iPod fans will be disappointed to hear there will be no 4G wireless.
