Job Title: Retail Area Manager | Retail Manager Job Description

Team/Department: Retail

Core Objectives:

As an area (or regional) manager, you'll have overall responsibility for a number of stores in an allocated area. You’ll be responsible for staff and you’ll work closely with other senior managers and department managers.

You will be expected to supervise performance and maintenance of the customer service activities or the organization with responsibility for the supervision of the day to day activities of your team.

Main Tasks/duties and responsibilities:

Setting sales targets
Maximising sales and profitability
Providing your team with a stimulating and supportive environment
Maintaining and increasing standards of customer service
Driving team performance
Controlling the training and development of your staff
Developing plans for the area’s progress and growth
Analyse and research trading trends within the area’s retail outlets, across other local retailers and in comparison with national trends to inform the plan for pricing and merchandising
Responsible for ensuring the retail outlets, products and displays are clean and tidy at all times
Responsible for the areas retail outlets performing all duties in compliance with health and safety.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Monitor the overall performance of the area’s retail outlets
Monitor stock control, storage and levels to maximize sales.
Ensure that all team members follow cash handling procedures
Resolve customers complaints and queries
Direct recruitment, training, set action and targets to ensure an excellent service to customers.
Delegate authority and responsibility


Your usual hours will be from 9am to 6pm. However you will be expected to work as and when necessary, to meet the needs of the team and your targets.

Qualifications sufficient to perform this role:

Previous experience in a managerial role is essential if you want this role. Employers will also look for candidates educated to at least Level 3 (A Level or equivalent). Vocational qualifications that will give you an advantage are:

Level 4/5 foundation degree in retailing
Degree in retail management, business or marketing


Area managers can earn between £25k and £50k plus there are often benefits, bonuses and commission for meeting targets.
