Nisha Parmar, Marketing Assistant at CFD trading and spread betting provider Spread Co gives us some insight into working within the financial services. From keeping up to date with the changing regulations set by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) to the key attributes you need to succeed in a challenging industry, Nisha advises us on how to succeed.
What was it about the financial sector that attracted you?
Handling other people’s money is involved, this does require a lot of responsibility, a big plus is that the financial sector is a great place to develop a career and move up a ladder. A lot of the skills you learn from working within a financial company such as accounting, budgeting and financial analysis can be transferable and are valuable in any industry.
What makes it different from other industries?
As I mentioned, the finance industry does offer many opportunities for progression, also a career in finance can be very rewarding and there are a lot on incentives to do well.
Do you need a certain personality to succeed? What key skills do you need?
As the finance industry demands a high level of responsibility. It is vital that all applicants have suitable skill sets such as strong analytical and IT skills, commercial awareness as well as up to date knowledge on current affairs and issues surrounding the industry. Good communications skills are equally very important, as much of the work is done by collaborating on team projects and being able to convey financial information. Being able to communicate to a non-financial audience is extremely desirable, especially when communicating to the outside world.
What does a typical day look like for you at Spread Co?
A typical day would start off at 9 am. The first thing I do is check up on any emails I may have missed while I was away from my desk. This is usually followed up by a brief catch up meeting to update the team on the progress of any current projects and to discuss further strategies.
As I mentioned before, working within a financial institution can be fast paced; the markets are constantly moving, this means that every day requires a new approach of how to utilise the current movements in order to take advantages of any changes.
The remainder of the day is in keeping with the applied strategy, implemented across all of the marketing channels. As a company we have to ensure all collateral and marketing material is compliant with the FCA regulatory requirements (Financial Conduct Authority), and is fit to be distributed. Once this has all been taken care of, my day ends as well.
What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?
We are constantly adjusting our strategy on how to spread financial information, using channels such as Social Media, as well as web, mobile, tablet and press advertising and are always trying to find new ways to make our product accessible to our clients and to spread our message.
What’s the most interesting part of your job?
The most interesting part of the job is that you never stop learning, the markets never stand still and there are always new ways to strategize and communicate the product to the audience.
How can applicants stand out from the crowd?
The world of finance is very competitive. Industry awareness is always an advantage which you can gain by doing an internship during your studies and reading the financial news and current affairs regularly. Always keep up to date. Passion and ambition are very important qualities in this business.
What is the most important piece of advice you can give a student/graduate?
Get as much experience as you can. Do internships, find out where your interests lie and prepare yourself for the real world as early as possible.
