Job Description

A category ‘B’ prison providing approximately 1,425 places for sentenced males adults is seeking a Prison Custodial Officer based in Birmingham to join its expanding team. It is also a ‘holding’ prison that services the West Midlands Courts. There is an opportunity to undertake a further 12 months on the job training Apprenticeship in Custodial and Detention Services. This company invests heavily in its people.  If you join this company, you will attend a comprehensive training programme to equip you with the skills and knowledge for the job. As well as ongoing support and development opportunities we offer generous holiday entitlement, company pension, an onsite gym, staff canteen, an onsite health care team to support you, free onsite parking and the chance to do an extraordinary job – every day.

Whatever job you do now, you may have the skills to change your career.  That is what PCOs have done.  All you need is a commitment to do the right thing and the ability to build rapport with just about anyone.

Working in a prison isn’t just about keeping people behind bars.  With a calm, firm but fair and non-judgemental approach, you’ll also need to be a listener, team player, counsellor, peacekeeper and social worker.  Working well with a disciplined, supportive and professional team is vital in this 24/7 environment.  All these qualities coupled with a vigilant and versatile approach are what makes a good PCO.

To be a successful Prison Custodial Officer you will have the following skills and experience:

  • A qualification level 2 BTEC as well as qualifications in First Aid, Control and Restraint and Health and Safety.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • A real passion to provide custody with care.
You will be working an average of 39 hours per week.

In return, the Prison Custodial Officer will receive a salary of £20,901.13 per annum.

Please note that these vacancies are subject to a 5 year checkable history and the strict vetting standards set by G4S and the Secretary of State for the Home Office and are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be required to attend a Security Vetting Interview and achieve satisfactory Security Clearance. You must be eligible to work in the UK and must have been resident in the UK for a minimum period of 5 years. You will also need to provide full details of your employment and education history for the last 10 years as part of the security screening process for this role.
