SALARY & BENEFITS: circa £22,000 plus 4 weeks annual holiday excluding bank holidays and pension
WORKING HOURS: Full Time – 36 hours per week (start times can be between 06:00am & 10:00am)
THE COMPANY: Are you looking to work in a fast paced, hands on, and outdoor role? Our client is is looking to recruit a new Rail Operative / Train Driver to work alongside their existing team in ensuring the successful delivery of their trains to their customers. As a Rail Operative / Train Driver you will be an essential part of the business, ensuring the punctual running of trains, ensuring the permanent way is maintained to a high standard, and our client's fleet of diesel locomotives are serviced and available for use.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with the right attitude and skills sets as although previous experience driving Locomotives or Trains would be a distinct advantage, previous experience is not essential as individuals with experience in a hands on mechanical or engineering role are welcome top apply.
THE ROLE: Your main place of work will be across the site at Ribble Steam Railway in Preston, Lancashire primarily from Monday – Friday and your main duties will be working to ensure our client's freight trains arrive and depart on time, carry out permanent way and track maintenance, as well as general locomotive maintenance. This role will require you to work on your feet for long periods of time, carry out manual handling and working outdoors is an essential part of this role.
Key Duties for the Rail Operative / Train Driver's role :-
- Deliver on safe and on time running for our services
- Work as ground staff assisting in the movement of trains
- Operate our signalling system
- Drive our fleet of diesel locomotives.
THE CANDIDATE: The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience as a Rail Operative / Train Driver although this is not essential as for the right candidate who has a good knowledge and background in related fields like engineering or mechanics, full training can be provided. You must be able to commute to Preston, Lancashire and it is essential you have a valid UK Driving Licence and are able to commit to start times which can be between 06:00am and 10:00am. Candidates should be mature and reliable individuals and due to the safety critical nature of this role candidates must be aged 18 or over, and will need to comply with our client's medical and drugs and alcohol standards and regular testing.
Key Experience/ Characteristics preferred for the Rail Operative / Train Driver' role in Preston, Lancashire :-
- Must have excellent communication skills both written and spoken
- Good organisation and coordination skills essential
- Good knowledge/understanding in related fields like engineering or mechanics essential
- Although not essential previous experience driving Diesel Locomotives would be desirable
- Although not essential, Experience/interest in the heritage sector would be an advantage
